What is reflexology?

Treat yourself. Treat your feet.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet (and hands) that correspond with all the glands, organs and parts of the body. It is a non-invasive treatment, that only requires you to remove your shoes and socks. During a treatment your reflexologist will stimulate all of the reflexes in your feet by using their thumbs and fingers. This will improve blood circulation and remove blockages in nerve supply resulting in deep relaxation. You may experience tenderness in particular parts of your feet, which is completely normal, and highlights that there may be congestion of blood supply or energy to that part of your body. Your reflexologist can adjust their pressure accordingly to suit your comfort level and encourage relaxation. Reflexology works by activating the parasympathetic nervous system which calms your body and brings back homeostasis (balance), for complete health and wellbeing.

Put simply, by treating your feet you can experience powerful benefits to body, mind and spirit.

Put simply, by treating your feet (or hands) you can experience powerful benefits to body, mind and spirit. In a world where stress and tension and ‘busy-ness’ is a measure of your success in life, it is no wonder we are all feeling tired, sluggish and out of balance. Your body has an innate intelligence to heal itself, however this process is only possible from a place of relaxation and calm. Give yourself the gift of calm through reflexology and your body will respond with health, wellness and a newfound sense of balance.

It is important to note that although reflexology is able to treat the symptoms of many chronic and acute conditions, it is not a diagnostic tool and is not a replacement for a visit to your GP or specialist. It is a very valuable complementary therapy and can be of great benefit to ease discomfort and relieve pain and bring you back to who you want to be.

Benefits of reflexology

Reflexology has many benefits for your health and wellbeing. You will notice a profound sense of calm and stillness, your sleep may be deeper and more restful and you will feel more balanced. You may even find that you learn something new about yourself as reflexology has an amazing way of bringing light to your mind, body and spirit.

When you arrive at The Gatehouse 117-119 Aphrasia Street, Newtown you will be warmly welcomed in to the nurturing nook that is Finding Your Feet. A small brick building next to an old homestead. Soak up the lovely garden atmosphere and drink in the essential oils oozing from the clinic space. If a treatment is in progress when you arrive, you will be directed to the cosy waiting room in the main house.

To find out more about you and to provide you with the best care I will ask you to fill out a short health history form and we will discuss any current concerns or specific reflex points you would like me to spend extra time working.

Next, I will ask you to remove your shoes and socks. There is no need to feel uncomfortable about the state of your feet - I will wash your feet, so please don’t feel embarrassed. This is a therapeutic treatment and is meant for you to be at ease and in your own skin, however it arrives on the day!

There will be a warm, aromatic foot bath waiting for you. Feel your tension melt away as your feet soak and you begin to let go of your day and anything in the outside world.

After your feet have been washed and dried, it is time to nestle back into the reclining chair which oozes relaxation from the moment you sit down and lie back. For your comfort, I have blankets to cover you to keep you warm. If you would like a heat or eye pack, I have those too.

I will then commence your treatment and apply an aromatic cream. If you have any sensitivities to essential oils just let me know, and I can use a non-scented cream. Each foot has 30 minutes of dedicated treatment time, to ensure that all reflexes are covered.

As I work on your feet, I can adjust my pressure to suit your needs. If I am pressing too firmly for your comfort level, please let me know.

Following the treatment, we will discuss what I observed in relation to any areas of tenderness and how these relate to your body. If I find any particular areas of congestion, I will show you how to work the corresponding reflexes on your hands so that you can treat yourself at home.

Once you have your shoes and socks back on I will have a glass of water waiting for you. When you’re ready, you can float out the door feeling lighter, more energised, less stressed and full of a sense that everything is alright with the world.

Step outside, spread the love and bring joy to others with your new found perspective on life.
